Crime and Misery in Vienna around 1900
Vienna around 1900 – that means the Habsburg dynasty, high culture, the Ringstrasse era ... But under the shiny surface of the growing cosmopolitan city live those who are not wanted at the surface: tramps, beggars, and vagrants, who are not seen on the magnificent boulevards, but in the poorhouses, warming rooms, men's hostels, or even in the sewers.
This tour takes a look behind the scenes of a world city that was bursting at the seams around 1900 and initially barely able to cope with the social challenges of its time. It follows in the footsteps of the journalist Emil Kläger, who in 1908 in his book Through the Viennese Quarters of Misery and Crime drew attention to those with whom the well-to-do citizens wanted nothing to do. The route from the second district to the city center leads away from the tourist trail, but also occasionally along it.
